Grilling and BBQ Safety

Summertime is the peak season for grilling, did you know July is the peak month for grill fires? Every year there are around 8,800 grill fires reported with an average of $96 million in related property damages.

Many Americans will be firing up their grills and enjoying their annual holiday hot dogs and burgers. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind while enjoying a delicious and safe cookout.

  • One leading cause of grill fires stems from a simple oversight, failure to clean the grill. Properly inspect your grill before each use for grease build-up and clean after each use.

  • Another fire hazard is keeping the grill and open flames in close proximity to flammable objects. Make sure to clear a 3ft. radius around the grill outside and away from child play areas.

  • No matter how harmless it may seem, leaving an unattended grill even for a few seconds can mean catastrophic consequences. Designate an adult who will stay with the grill at all times while it is on.

  • Be sure to turn off the gas when you are finished grilling or place cooled coals in a metal, lidded container.
